ILE exists because the person best placed to get you through an exam is someone who recently sat it and excelled.

How ILE started

ILE was founded by Tahan Islam, a medical student at the University of Cambridge. At A-Level he sat Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, finishing with four A*s, scores of 97% and above in three subjects, and a Distinction in the Advanced Extension Award for Mathematics.

Through his own A-Levels, he noticed something about tutoring. The tutors who helped most were rarely the ones with decades of teaching experience. They were the ones who had recently sat the same papers: people who still remembered what the night before the exam felt like, which questions catch students out, and exactly how mark schemes reward answers. Experience of the exam beat experience of the classroom.

ILE was built on that idea. Every tutor here is a current student at a leading UK university who excelled in the subject they now teach. They are close enough to the exams to remember everything, and far enough through them to teach what they learned.

How we choose tutors

We are deliberately selective. Joining ILE requires more than good grades:

Top grades in the subject they teachAn A* (or equivalent top result) in the specific subject, not just a strong overall record. A tutor's claimed grades are verified before they teach.
A place at a leading universityOur tutors study at Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, UCL, KCL and other top institutions, many in highly competitive courses such as Medicine.
RecencyOur tutors sat their A-Levels within the last few years, so their knowledge of specifications, mark schemes and examiner expectations is current.
The ability to teach, not just to knowSubject brilliance alone is not enough. Tutors are assessed on how clearly they explain, how they diagnose gaps, and how they adapt to different students.

What we believe

Marks are a skill

Understanding the subject and scoring in the exam are related but different skills. We teach both, deliberately.

No assumptions

Every student starts with a diagnostic, not a guess. The plan is built on where you actually are.

Honest progress

Parents and students see session notes and progress after every session. If something is not working, we change it.
