A-Level, GCSE & admissions test tutoring · Online, UK‑wide

For students,
by students.

Every ILE tutor sat these exams recently and came away with an A*. They know which questions catch people out, because those questions caught them out first.

Sitting the UCAT, LNAT, TMUA, ESAT or TARA? We prepare students for those too.

The best tutor is usually the person who just sat it

ILE was started by Tahan Islam, now reading Medicine at Cambridge. Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry at A-Level. Four A*s, 97% or above in three of them, and a Distinction in the Advanced Extension Award.

The tutors who helped him most were never the ones with thirty years in a classroom. They were the ones who had sat the paper two summers earlier and could still remember the panic. That is who we hire: current students at Oxbridge, Imperial, LSE and other leading universities, each teaching only the subjects they took top marks in themselves.

A mark scheme tells you what the answer was. Someone who sat the paper two years ago can tell you how to find it under pressure.

We do not hire generalists. Every tutor here is a current student at a leading university, and every one of them teaches only the subjects they took top marks in. Their own results are on the cards below, subject by subject.

Who we work with

Wherever you're starting from

01 Grade recovery

Most students come to us predicted a grade or two below what they need. We work backwards from the exam date and close the gaps biggest first, because a topic worth eighteen marks matters more than one worth three.

02 A to A*

The gap between an A and an A* is rarely knowledge. It is usually four or five habits in how answers get written, repeated across every paper. We find them by marking your work properly, then close them one at a time.

03 Competitive entry

Medicine, Oxbridge and anything asking for A*AA needs the grades and an application that survives an interview. Our tutors sat those admissions a year or two ago. They prepare students for both at once.

Subjects

A-Level and GCSE, across the major boards

Sitting an admissions test too? We prepare students for the UCAT, LNAT, TMUA, ESAT and TARA.

Mathematics
Pure, statistics and mechanics in full. Method marks are taught as deliberately as the maths, because that is where most of the lost marks are.

Three stages, then weekly sessions

The same route for every student, cut to fit their subject, their board and the number of weeks left.

1
Diagnostic session
We go through your recent papers and mark them against the real scheme, not a rough guess. You finish that first session knowing which topics are costing you marks, and roughly how many.
2
Your plan
A session-by-session curriculum built around those gaps, your exam board and the weeks you have left. Whatever is worth the most marks gets covered first.
3
Weekly sessions
Regular 1-1 work, timed practice, written feedback. Progress is recorded after every session, and when something is not landing the plan gets rewritten rather than repeated.

What changed, in their words

I was predicted a C going into Year 13 and honestly thought Maths was beyond me at this level. Within a few weeks I could see exactly what I'd been doing wrong. I sat the exam confident and came out with an A*.
