Where the marks actually go

The command word sets the AO split

Describe is AO1, apply is AO2, evaluate is AO3, and a sixteen-marker is a mix with a published ratio. Writing beautifully about the wrong objective is the most common way to lose half of a long question.

Application questions need the scenario named

If the stem gives you Jamal and his phobia, the answer says Jamal and his phobia. Marks for AO2 are awarded for the link to the stem, not for the theory, which has usually already been credited.

Research methods is about a tenth of the marks

Designing studies, identifying variables, choosing and interpreting the statistical tests, calculating and quoting to the right precision. These are learnable in an afternoon and they appear on every paper.

Evaluation means developed points

One criticism taken three sentences deep beats four criticisms listed. State the point, explain why it matters for that theory, then say what it implies. Depth is explicitly what the mark scheme rewards in the top band.
