Describe wants the pattern in front of you and no reasons. Explain wants the mechanism and no description. Suggest means the specification does not cover this case and the examiner will accept sound biology applied to it. Answering the wrong verb is the most expensive habit at A-Level, because a full, correct answer to a question nobody asked scores nothing.
A mark scheme is a list of distinct creditworthy ideas, and you get one mark per idea you reach. Restating the stem is not an idea. Two sentences making the same point score once. On a six-mark question the examiner is looking for six separable things, which is why planning the list before writing beats writing until the space is full.
The longer questions want a chain: this happens, which causes this, which results in that. Isolated true statements, however many, do not make a chain. Naming the structure and then saying what it does to what is usually the difference between three marks and six.
Standard form, percentage change, magnification, surface area to volume, rates from a gradient, and the statistical tests. These are the marks most reliably lost by biologists, and most reliably regained, because the techniques are short and they repeat every single year.
